Literacy:
At St. Mary’s Catholic School, we believe strong foundational skills are the key to success, particularly in literacy and writing. Students are given the foundation of letter recognition, phonics, and writing. Students in grades K-3 have 90-120 minutes of instruction per school day in this area.
Math:
Our math program focuses on building a strong foundation through learning math facts and understanding mathematical concepts. This is done through hands-on manipulative learning and relating math concepts to real-world situations.
Science and Social Studies:
Students will learn and understand the subjects by exploring, discussing, and demonstrating their understanding of concepts. These activities help students develop analytical skills that will help them become critical thinkers and problem solvers.
Religion:
Faith development is at the core of our school community, and students at this age are encouraged to learn about their faith, the Catholic Church, and Christian beliefs that support positive behaviors and relationships.
Literacy:
Students in 4th Grade are now “Reading to Learn,” meaning that reading comprehension is at the core of this program. They use various literary resources, including novels, short stories, poetry, and textbooks, to expand their knowledge and understanding of reading and writing.
Math:
Our math program focuses on continuing a strong foundation through learning math facts and developing an understanding of mathematical concepts while providing opportunities for critical thinking and problem-solving.
Science and Social Studies:
Students further develop an understanding of how math, science, and social studies apply to everyday life through hands-on experiences. They learn theory-based problem-solving and how to determine the answer to self-generated hypotheses.
